The Problem of Obsolete Bearings

Robin Kyte, Sales Manager at The Barden Corporation (UK) Ltd, explains why bearing obsolescence is so important when it comes to safety-critical applications such as aircraft systems and nuclear power plant applications. Locating and sourcing a supplier of an obsolete mechanical component such as a bearing, is a growing concern for many organisations, particularly if the component is part of a safety-critical system on an aircraft or nuclear power plant application. Sourcing a bearing for a mechanical system on a military aircraft, for example, can be a challenging process, particularly if the system is an ageing one.

The solution for the system operator is to find a bearing supplier who is able to manufacture the specified bearing to the same (or higher) quality standards as the original and who is also willing to supply in small batch sizes, anything between 10 and 500 units. Robin Kyte is a Sales Manager at Plymouth-based bearings manufacturer The Barden Corporation (UK) Ltd. The company manufactures a range of super precision angular contact and deep groove ball bearings. The focus is on special configuration bearings that add value and provide engineered solutions for the customer. In this scenario, many customers approach Barden because we are willing to manufacture direct replacement bearings in relatively small batch sizes and we have the manufacturing capability to produce special engineered bearings. Barden also have a strict non-obsolescence policy.”

Solid Oil lubrication protects bearings

An innovation in lubrication, developed and manufactured by SKF, the leading knowledge engineering company, has been introduced to protect bearings that are used in particularly demanding applications, in areas where they cannot easily be relubricated, or where high levels of contamination can otherwise affect their operation. Called Solid Oil, the technology is contained within the normal bearing envelope and has no negative impact on performance or functionality, yet depending on the application it can significantly prolong operating life.

Solid Oil bearings are essentially sealed for life, using a conventional cage and rolling element arrangement that incorporates a specially developed oil-impregnated polymer material, which completely fills the internal voids within each bearing, leaving a narrow gap between rolling elements and raceways. The micro-porous structure of the polymer material holds up to four times more oil than a conventional grease-filled bearing, and allows oil to be released gradually around the moving internal surfaces, ensuring uniform and consistent lubrication for the operating life of each bearing. This construction offers a number of important benefits over conventional bearings. In particular, it enables oil to be dispersed evenly over the bearing surfaces regardless of operating temperature.

Composite becoming the bearing of choice for cutter suction dredgers claims Thordon

Thordon Composite cutterhead shaft bearings have been recently installed or ordered on six cutter suction dredgers in Europe, China and the Middle East. Thordon Composite is a tough two-component elastomeric polymer alloy bearing specifically formulated to provide superior wear life in very abrasive water conditions. Thordon Composite bearings operating in combination with a hard stainless steel shaft or hard coated shaft liner such as Ni-Cr-B, routinely outwear rubber bearings by a factor of two or more, significantly reducing maintenance downtime and costs over the operating life of the dredge.

These bearings last longer than rubber bearings. We have installed Thordon Composite on CSD Pontos and CSD Aetos and plan to continue using Thordon Composite bearings and staves." National Marine Dredging Company in the UAE has also been using Thordon Composite dredge bearings since 1996 with installations on five of their dredgers. The recently built jumbo dredger, D'Artagnan, owned by Société De Dragage International, France, also has water lubricated Thordon Composite intermediate lineshaft bearings installed in addition to the Composite cutterhead shaft bearings.

China Bearing Industry Report, 2006

By the end of the “Tenth Five-Year Plan”, China has accomplished fruitful achievement in mass-production of bearing, realizing the objectives of the bearing industry in 2003 two years ahead of schedule. In 2004, China ranked fourth worldwide in sales volume of bearing, only behind Japan, Germany and Sweden. However, considering the low proportion of high-precision, high-tech and high value-added products, China lags far behind the industrial powers in bearing manufacturing. As a result, China has to import high-quality bearing to meet the great demand of the domestic market. Foreign exchange expenditure for bearing importation reached 490million dollars, 648 million dollars, 879million dollars and 1.125 billion dollars respectively in 2001-2004, increasing by 33.94% annually. At present, the demand of China bearing industry is mainly driven by the development of major machinery industries and the demand of exportation. There is a huge market potential in China's bearing industry, with the rapid development of domestic major machinery industries providing vast space for the development of China bearing industry.

In 2004, machinery industry maintained a rapid momentum and significant increases have taken place in the industries of engineering machinery, heavy & mining machinery, agricultural machinery, instrument and apparatus, machine tool and others. The increase rate reached above 28% in some industries. In the first part of 2005, the added value of machinery industry increased by 27.3% over the same period last year. An average increase of over 50% occurred to computer controlled machine tools, forklift trucks, earth-moving machinery, power equipment, metallurgy equipment and metal rolling equipment. Export volume of machinery increased by 46% over the same period last year, which further stimulated the demand of the bearing market. Besides, with many state engineering projects such as the project of natural gas diversion from the western to the eastern region, South-to-North water diversion project, the Yangtze Three Gorges project (TGP), 2008Beijing Olympic Games and Shanghai World Exposition 2010, there will be great demand for mechanical and electrical bearing, which will further accelerates the development of the bearing market.

The Advantages of Fitting Aqualube Bearings

Principle of Operation :Rubber and water make the perfect combination for a bearing material and lubricant. The natural resilience of rubber gives the bearing its shock, vibration and nose absorption properties. The shape of the Aqualube bearing is the main reason for its success. Unlike many other bearings in the market the Aqualube bearing strips are shaped in such a way that a hydrodynamic water wedge is formed between shaft and bearing, even at very low shaft speed.Water is the perfect lubrication medium, particularly for marine craft, because of its natural abundance, non-compressibility, cooling properties, and low coefficient of friction when between bearing strip and shaft. The water enters the bearing through the longitudinal grooves and moves radially between the propeller shaft and the bearing face in a thin film. Once this film, or wedge, has developed the shaft does not actually come into contact with the bearing.

Abrasion Resistance:The unique shape of the Aqualube bearing gives it an excellent resistance to abrasion. This helps to reduce wear on the bearing surfaces in environments where sand and other abrasive particulates are held in suspension, as found in shallow water. The bearing is designed to let these abrasive particles across it’s surface and into the grooves where they are flushed out by the water feed pressure. The system prevents the particles from getting embedded into the bearing surface and causing severe wear on the propeller shaft.

Bearing

A bearing is a device to permit constrained relative motion between two parts, typically rotation or linear movement. Bearings may be classified broadly according to the motions they allow and according to their principle of operation as well as by the directions of applied loads they can handle.Bearing friction:Low friction bearings are often important for efficiency, to reduce wear and to facilitate high speeds. Essentially, a bearing can reduce friction by virtue of its shape, by its material, or by introducing and containing a fluid between surfaces.By shape, gains advantage usually by using spheres or rollers.By material, exploits the nature of the bearing material used. (An example would be using plastics that have low surface friction.)By fluid, exploits the low viscosity of a layer of fluid, such as a lubricant or as a pressurized medium to keep the two solid parts from touching.By fields, exploits electromagnetic fields, such as magnetic fields, to keep solid parts from touching.Combinations of these can even be employed within the same bearing. An example of this is where the cage is made of plastic, and it separates the rollers/balls, which reduce friction by their shape and finish.

Pinciples of operation
Animation of ball bearingThere are at least six common principles of operation:
sliding bearings, usually called "bushes", "bushings", "journal bearings", "sleeve bearings", "rifle bearings", or "plain bearings" rolling-element bearings such as ball bearings and roller bearings jewel bearings, in which the load is carried by rolling the axle slightly off-center fluid bearings, in which the load is carried by a gas or liquid magnetic bearings, in which the load is carried by a magnetic field flexure bearings, in which the motion is supported by a load element which bends.

How to choose skateboard bearings

With so many different types and brands of skate board bearings, it can often be quite difficult to make a decision on what brand and type of skateboard wheel bearing would be the best choice for your skating style.Shielded and Sealed Bearings:
Many skaters get confused when thinking about the differences in sealed bearings and shielded bearings. All bearings you can buy for a skateboard are shielded on one side, yet you can buy bearings that are shielded on both sides. Shielded bearings will allow a minimal amount of dirt and such into the bearings. Sealed bearings are covered by a metal shield, and then a coating is applied to the exterior, which seals them, ensuring that they do not allow dirt, moisture, and other contaminates on the inside of the bearing which can be harmful.

Bones Swiss Ceramic bearings:
These bearings are said to be the fastest, strongest, and lightest bearings available worldwide. Many professional skateboarders use Bones Swiss Ceramic bearings, which are said to be the best bearings money can buy. Bones Swiss Ceramic bearings are made for the serious or professional skateboarders, and are not intended for use by the novice skater. These ceramic bearings are easy to clean, and their only drawback is their expensive cost, of approximately $120 for a set of 8 bearings.Bones Reds:Bones Reds can be used by any skater, and are a very good choice for the novice skateboarder. These bearings will cost you around $25 for a package of 8 bearings. Bones Reds are said to be the best quality bearings in their price range, and they will outlast the competition. Bones Reds are manufactured with super-finished chromium steel balls and races, along with a high velocity Nylon ball retainer. The Bones Reds come loaded with Speed Cream lubricant and feature a non-contact red rubber shield to keep out contaminates.Though there are many other brands of skateboard wheel bearings, the bearing listed are said to be the top choices for skateboard wheel bearings. It's your choice, so choose wisely.
