A levitated bearing experiment is being used to investigate issues in the identification and control of fast, unstable, highly coupled, MIMO systems. DSP based control approaches are also being investigated. The bearing experiment has been donated by Magnetic Moments LLC. Nancy Morse has investigated the control and identification aspects of the problem. Her work on achievable performance and robustness for various magnetic bearing systems can be found in: "Magnetic bearing measurement configurations and associated robustness and performance limitations," Nancy Morse Thibeault and Roy S. Smith, ASME J. Dynamic Systems, Measurement & Control, Vol. 124, No. 4, pp. 589-598, Dec., 2002. (pdf: 208 KB) The magnetic bearing studies have also generated results on achievable performance for more general underactuated systems, described in, small footprint; non contacting bearing technology eliminating bearing wear; low operating costs (oil free design); low mechanical losses allowing higher efficiency. The bearings keep the rotor in levitation thanks to electromagnetics flux generated by stator windings. The resulting electricity at high frequency is then converted into regular grid voltage through an inverter. |

Active magnetic bearings (AMBs) are receiving increasing amounts of attention due to their unique characteristics. AMBs use actively controlled electromagnetic forces to control the motion of a rotor or other ferromagnetic body in air. Contact-free suspension leads to important advantages relative to conventional rolling element or hydrodynamic bearings: reliability, low-maintenance and losses, and higher speeds in extreme environments without requiring complex lubrication systems. Examples of applications include: high-performance vacuum pumps due to absence of wear, lubrication systems, and lubricant contamination of the process. Machining spindles used for high speed cutting which benefit from the high rotation speeds and accurate positioning that are enabled by contact free operation and active controls. Magnetic bearings are ideal for high speed applications such as flywheels, because they can run at much higher speeds than ball bearings because there is no friction. . All these compression units on magnetic bearings are destined for the Russian natural gas transport networks. These "oil-free" systems increase the reliability and safety, as well as simplifying the after-sales-service, of natural gas compression units. |
