These modern day conveyors, generally referred to environmentally friendly conveyors, have been with us in various configurations for over twenty years.
Although offering unique solutions to the everyday problems of transfer tower spillage, pipe conveyors have still to be accepted by the modern plant design engineer.
To assist in understanding the reasons for their general un-acceptance the writer has retraced the development of one of the most common alternative belt conveying options for bulk materials handling.
The system being reviewed is the pipe conveyor, which as its name suggests functions in all basic facets as a conventional belt conveyor, but after being fed and prior to being discharged the belt is formed into a tubular or pipe shape for the vast majority of its journey. (Refer Figure 1).

A pipe conveyor was put into operation by FAM in May 2000 at Lippendorf power station for transporting flue-gas desulphurisation gypsum (Fig. 1). The operator put top priority on avoiding material from trickling down onto the conveying route. For this reason, initially a completely closed conveying bridge with a conventionally troughed belt conveyor was favoured.
As the earth-damp flue-gas desulphurisation gypsum tends to stick to the belt, high levels of plant soiling are to be expected with conventional belt conveyors, because some material trickles down at every return strand idler.
due to the fact that increasing the contact pressure of the belt cleaners in combination with the abrasive properties of the flue-gas desulphurisation gypsum leads to increased wear on the belt and there was not enough space for a belt turn, the use of a closed belt conveyor system presented itself as an optimum solution.
The pipe-conveyor forms the flat belt along the route into a pipe. Six hexagonally arranged carrying idlers guide the belt in the upper and return strands. The belt is only opened at the charging and discharging points in order to load or unload the bulk material. In these areas there are crumb conveyors arranged below the opened belt, which take the material tricking down back into the main flow of material.
FAM was able to convince the operator to employ a pipe-conveyor for this application as this closed system prevents material from trickling down and dirtying the conveying route.
